SDMGA Petition
To the City Council:
We the undersigned citizens of the City of San Diego demand that the City
Council prevent the hijacking of Torrey Pines golf course by private interests
and do all of the following:
(1) Reject the Golf Division Five Year “Business Plan” as
unprofessional
and unjustified. The basic premise of the plan – that parkland is a “business” to
maximize revenues - violates the fundamental principle that parkland be
accessible to all citizens regardless of means. The purpose of Enterprise Funds
is make operations “pay as you go” not to be a cash cow to make public park users pay
for the financial mismanagement by the City.
(2) Require the Golf Division to submit a fair plan keyed to maintaining full
access for all city residents at affordable prices. Greens fees should be set at
levels which sustain the courses and not at levels to pay for facilities designed to
benefit private businesses. The current plan offers no basis for concluding that
price increases to residents are necessary.
(3) Reject plans to build an
unnecessary $13 million dollar clubhouse at Torrey Pines designed to benefit
private hotel interests and other moneyed interests and not the golfing public.
(4) Reject the Century Club’s attempt to be given private parkland to build its
headquarters.
(5) Create a process for meaningful public input into golfing issues and end the
regime of back room deals between special interests and the Golf Division such
as the recent attempts to have the GAC approve the Business Plan on two days notice and
the attempt to sneak the 18th Hole renovation at Torrey Pines North onto the City Council Agenda
for approval of a controversial action without public comment.
(6) Develop a plan to assure that City residents have a desirable share of the
prime tee times.
(7) Post all tee sheets on line so that everyone can monitor compliance with the
requirement that residents receive their stated 70% share.
(8)
Open up Golf Operations finances to public
inspection and audit.
