SDMGA: Report on City Council NR&C Committee Meeting of May 12, 2010: Golf Advisory Council to Be Re-established; Resident ID Card Cost May Be Reduced

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Acting on a proposal that SDMGA has been urging for more than a year, the NR&C voted unanimously to direct Park & Recreation and Golf Operations to provide a timeline for the new five - year plan and to formulate a Golf Advisory Council (GAC) to assist in the process. Donna Frye closed the meeting by letting the City staff know that she was inclined to reduce the annual fee to actual costs. So, the cost of the City Resident ID card may be coming down soon.

The re-establishment of the GAC is an important step in getting more citizen input into golf decisions. The last time the GAC met was in 2006 when it voted down the Five Year Business Plan.  The City has never called another GAC meeting since. The SDMGA has been advocating for the GAC to be reinstituted since our endorsed candidates Sherri LIghtner and Marti Emerald were elected to the City Council in November 2008.  The re-establishment of the GAC could signal a new era of cooperation between the City and municipal golfers. This could benefit both the local golfer and the City by including the viewpoints of municipal golfers early on in the process. This would allow working out accommodations before positions harden; wisely avoiding contentious disputes in the formal City Council meetings.
